Audio Troubleshooting Tips From a 20-Year Pro in Indiana, PA

My name is Bob Rout. I'm an audio/visual and electrical professional based in Indiana, PA with over 20 years of experience. In that time I've troubleshot just about every audio problem you can imagine — from dead car audio systems to home theaters that suddenly stopped working to commercial AV installations with mysterious hum issues.

Here's what I've learned about diagnosing audio problems quickly and efficiently.

Start Simple

Before touching a single cable, check the basics. Is everything powered on? Is the correct input selected? Is the volume turned up at every point in the signal chain? Is anything muted that shouldn't be? You'd be amazed how many service calls I've been on where the fix was this simple.

Work the Signal Chain

Audio travels from a source through a processor or amplifier and out to speakers. When something breaks, the key is figuring out exactly where in that chain the signal is being lost. Start at the source and move forward step by step. Swap cables one at a time. Test with known good components when possible. The goal is to isolate the problem to one specific link in the chain.

The Most Common Problems I See

Bad cables and connections cause more audio problems than anything else. Cables degrade over time, connectors corrode, and plugs work loose. Always swap suspect cables first before assuming something bigger is wrong.

Ground loops are the second most common culprit. If you're hearing a constant 60Hz hum, you've got a ground loop. In a home system, try plugging everything into the same power strip. In a car audio system, check your amplifier ground connection.

Blown drivers are easy to diagnose — one speaker is silent while everything else works fine. Swap a known good speaker into that location to confirm.

When to Call Someone

Some audio problems are worth figuring out yourself. Others — especially anything involving in-wall wiring, panel work, or commercial AV systems — are worth getting professional help. I'm based in Indiana, PA and happy to help with audio/visual and electrical projects throughout western Pennsylvania. You can reach me at bob-rout.com.
